Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture
The distal insertion of the Biceps tendon is attached/fixed to a bone at the elbow joint level. In some patients, the tendon is ruptured (i.e. pulled away from the bone). This is an acute injury caused by excessive pulling on the tendon (e.g. lifting heavy weight by sportman/sportwoman, or lesser weight by older people with an already weakened tendon). Initially it can be passed an-noticed by the patients, but shortly afterward they complain of pain and reduce power and ability to flex (bend) their elbow against resistance.

The diagnosis can be reached using the clinical examination, and can be confirmed by a scan.

Ruptured distal end of biceps tendon can be a disabling condition for some patients with a demanding manual job (builders, carpenters etc) as well as the sportsman/sportswoman (racquet sports, Rugby, body builders etc).

Treatment
The key elements for a successful outcome of managing this injury are an early diagnosis and prompt treatment. In the early detected case, the ruptured tendon can be repaired by re-attaching the loose end back to where it should be in the bone using special open technique. The operation can be done usually as a Day-Surgery case. Further detailed information would be provided during the consultation with Mr. Khalid Ayoub. Back...
